About STE Grades 1-8
Grade Level Details:First grade is a time of transitions
Welcome to the big school! First Grade Webpage Our first grade learners are getting used to the expectations that come along with being a “Big Kid at the Big School." In religion class we learn prayers, bible stories and the sacraments through art, music and a variety of experiences. We are a part of the weekly mass which helps us to live like Jesus. Our main goal for your child is to teach them to read. First grade at St. Elizabeth provides curriculum for young learners with a solid educational foundation through carefully planned instructional goals and learning objectives. We believe strongly that essential learning skills, cooperative social behavior and good study habits are the foundation for an excellent education. Our teachers concentrate not only what children learn, but how they learn. We emphasize the active learning process. In this process we encourage cooperative learning, which includes problem solving and decision making skills. Through our use of SAVVAS / Successmaker, guided reading and leveled readers, each learner’s individual needs are met. This helps everyone become the most successful reader they can. Social Studies and Science (Inspire Science) are taught through hands on learning and field trip experiences. Reveal Math, our math program helps us understand processes of math not just memorize facts. Through technology, games, using manipulatives and their work book we are engaged in our learning. Through writer’s workshop learners not only process the mechanics of writing but they are able to explore different genres of writing using mentor authors. Technology use with Chromebooks and the Clear Touch interactive panel is woven naturally in all subjects helping us create learners who are self-assured, confident and ready for the world! Teachers facilitate learning with their classroom webpages. This love for learning is what makes first grade the best! St. Elizabeth offers all a lively and loving community with endless possibilities. Please click the links below to access grade 1 curriculum standards from the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese. ELA Math Religion Science Social Studies Second graders love to learn! They run into school each day ready to explore the world of reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and religion. It is a big year for them in so many ways… Second graders grow in their faith through the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist, prayer, and learning how to actively participate in the Mass. Second graders become independent readers that work hard to build their reading fluency, grammar, phonics, reading comprehension skills, and reading stamina, by reading for longer periods of time and choosing more challenging books. Second graders write with a purpose and work to focus their ideas on one topic with interesting supporting details using the four-square method and six-trait writing steps. Second graders learn their basic math facts of addition and subtraction by memory and build their math skills by learning problem-solving strategies, regrouping, telling time, measuring, counting money, graphing, etc. Second graders explore the world around them in social studies and science. In both content areas, they learn more about how the world works and how to interact more conscientiously with others and the environment. Second graders are learning how to do their personal best each day. Students learn to live the Great Commandment to love God and love their neighbor so they can show their love for God, themselves, and others each day. Second grade is a great year of learning!! Each classroom is supported with Clear Touch interactive panels and Chromebook carts whereby each student is provided an assigned Chromebook with a school Google account for login purposes. Educators often say that this age group is moving from learning to read, to reading to learn! This is so true. In third-grade students will participate in whole-group, as well as small groups for reading instruction. We read a wide variety of texts, including Wit and Wisdom(Reading), Scholastic News, and an occasional novel. We spend time on reading strategies to help us become stronger, more capable readers. In math, third graders focus on multi-step problem solving, multiplication and division facts, fractions, and more. We use a variety of methods, including whole group, small group, centers, and technology to help students master skills and concepts in math. Third graders have fun with science and social studies and complete many small group and individual projects. One of the year’s highlights is the Wax Museum project! Hands-on activities and engaging projects round out these subjects. In writing, students learn several different genres and focus on the 6-Trait method. Students work hard to develop their writing skills. Students participate in religion studies daily. They learn about our Catholic faith and traditions and have several opportunities for meaningful authentic service. Children attend Mass weekly. Major themes include the earliest migrations, Native American settlements, European discovery, British control of the colonies, the American Revolution, westward expansion, the age of compromise, and the Civil War. 8th graders build off of what was learned the year before in a continued effort to fundamentally grasp the rise of the country they call home. Essential issues covered include Civil War and Reconstruction, Jim Crow and a hundred years of segregation, the gradual shift to modernism known as the gilded age, the world wars, the birth of post-modernism, and America’s place as a superpower, for better and worse. Physical Education Health Spanish At St. Elizabeth School, Spanish is taught to all learners in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Spanish education this school year with The Language Project. This program provides us a teacher and a curriculum to use in presenting Spanish instruction. The Language Project focuses on immersion as the primary element in presenting language to students. Our classroom teacher, Mr. Antonio Rojas, speaks to the students in Spanish as he leads the class in the grade level curriculum. Who Are We? The Language Project is super excited to be partnering with St. Elizabeth this year as your Spanish language education providers. They specialize in immersion-style language education for children aged 2 -14 years old. Students will learn Spanish the natural way through a multi-level, play-based, total-immersion curriculum. Classes include dynamic and high-energy games, music, stories, and movement activities to teach practical and conversational Spanish, including reading and writing skills in the language. Why Learn Early? Childhood is prime time to learn a second language. During this time, children are able to pick up on language naturally without the explicit explanation of grammar rules that adults struggle with. Additionally, ear and speech muscles in children are more easily able to distinguish different sounds in languages, which result in native-like accuracy and pronunciation in a second language. The Benefits of Bilingualism Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, even before English! By being bilingual in both languages, a child’s brain has enhanced math and problem solving skills, greater decision making skills, a better working memory, better performance on standardized tests, and a new found sense of cultural awareness! We believe that languages are a gift, a gift that lasts a lifetime! Assessments The professor will conduct periodic formative evaluations to determine students’ progress. The results of these assessments are used to modify instruction. Students’ language development will be assessed more formally three times a year and a report will be sent home in conjunction with quarterly report cards. Extra Curriculars

Meeting our Students from where they are...The elementary school curriculum nurtures and challenges students to have the grit and perseverance to develop into independent individuals who possess the characteristics and skills to navigate through their educational journey.
Academic excellence is embedded within the school curriculum and supported by the St. Elizabeth Christ Skills. Through collaboration and professional development of faculty and staff, lessons are designed in which students explore, investigate, and collaborate to ensure the growth of higher-order thinking skills, competent problem solving and the ability to take risks. When facing an undesired outcome, students have the ability to regroup and approach the challenge in an alternate manner. St. Elizabeth Catholic School is one of twelve Diocesan schools that benefit from grants through the FIRE Foundation. What does that mean? We believe strongly in inclusive education where all children, regardless of ability, learn together. The benefits of inclusive education are numerous for both students with and without special needs. Inclusion also gives Catholic learning communities a unique opportunity to live our faith by modeling Christ’s love for others. Students are appreciated for their individual strengths while academic expectations are based on where the student is both developmentally and cognitively. The ultimate outcome of a St. Elizabeth education is students who have the confidence and tools to become individuals who can navigate through life in their faith and ultimately make a positive impact in their ever-changing world. On their journey from elementary to middle school, students experience tremendous change. St. Elizabeth faculty guide our young learners through these formative years with multi-faceted and developmentally responsive programs and activities designed to meet the unique needs of early adolescents.
