STE Robotics Qualifies at the FIRST Lego League Challenge

Two teams (Irish Nerds and Green Machines) competed at Penn Valley in the First LEGO League Challenge Qualifier on Saturday, December 16.

Green Machine: Connor (8th), Fisher (7th), Beckett (7th), Jonathan (4th), Boston (4th), and Mary (4th)

Irish Nerds: Jack Mo. (8th), Jack Mc. (8th), Owen (6th), Wilson (5th), Tommy (4th), Molly (4th), and Dominic (4th)

Since August, students have been preparing with their coaches to build a robot with attachments that can complete as many missions as they can within 2.5 minutes which requires a lot of problem-solving skills. The competition consisted of one practice match and three official matches that are scored by how successful the robot was coded to complete the missions and demonstrating gracious professionalism.
Students also presented their Art Themed innovation project, Robot Design and CoreValues to a panel of judges within a question-and-answer session.

FIRST philosophies of Gracious Professionalism and Cooperation through FIRST Core Values:

Discovery: Explore new skills and ideas.
Innovation: Use creativity and persistence to solve problems.
Impact:  Apply what we learn to improve our world.
Inclusion: Respect each other and embrace our differences.
Teamwork: Stronger when we work together.
Fun: Enjoy and celebrate what we do!

FIRST Robotics Competition

The STE Robotics team (grades 4-8) have worked hard this first semester and will compete this weekend (December 16) at Penn Valley.
Two teams will vie for awards: Green Machine and Irish Nerds.

St. Elizabeth School participates in the FIRST® robotics organization. Founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST® is a global nonprofit organization that prepares young people for the future through a suite of life-changing youth robotics programs that build skills, confidence, and resilience.

The potential for our students is high when involved with robotics or STEAM programming. Focus is on the Core Values of inclusivity, cooperating, creativity, problem solving, exploring new ideas, applying what is learned to improve our world, and having fun.

The STE's team consists of 6 students in 4th grade, 1 in 5th, 1 in 6th, 2 in 7th, and 3 in 8th grade. We welcome any STE student in grades 4-8 to join!

The community wishes them well!

Stop Motion Animation for Students in Grades 4-8

17 STE students in grades 4-8 experienced the real-life struggle of a professional animator and were engaged in problem solving toward solutions during a 4-day stop motion animation camp in the STE STEAM Lab!

Daily challenges were designed to use any and all pieces to create a "story" then animate it.
Students developed their storyboards and scripts, put the figures into action, and then added sound effects to their final videos. Many were quite elaborate and the sound effects were super fun!

They learned how to create more fluid transitions and to slow down or speed up the frames to create a natural movement effect.

We looked at some awesome examples to get the idea and expectations. And, we learned about hte different professional opportunities in the animation world, as well as some "animation" vocabulary.

Storyboarding is critical and this is a difficult concept. Students continued to complete the storyboard development and frame drawings with what happens at each "frame."

By all accounts the camp was an enjoyable learning experience for St. Elizabeth students. They impressed all of us by how quickly they all picked up the skills of the application. These skills learned will be valuable as they use the tools and resources in their school work, or just for fun!

There are other resources for stop action videos; this is the one used during camp.
